What You Should Know About EAB?
Emerald Ash Borer or EAB (Agrilus planipennis) is a green jewel beetle native to Northeastern Asia. It is considered as a highly invasive species that can totally destroy ash trees in two to four years. The female beetles lay eggs on bark crevices, flakes, or cracks. After hatching, the larvae feed underneath the bark. Once they become adults, EAB leave distinctive D-shaped exit holes in the outer bark of the trunk or branches. They are most common in June and July but also pose a threat during late May up to early September. This Asian beetle has a metallic green wing cover and a purple or coppery red abdomen. One of the alarming facts about emerald ash borer is that it can spread between 1.6 and 49.7 miles a year. Some people may unknowingly spread the beetle by transporting ash bark containing products such as nursery stock and firewood.Signs of EAB Infection
There are different approaches to control and treat infested ash trees. However, it is still important to adopt preventive measures to avoid emerald ash borer infestation. Signs of EAB infection include thinning foliage, yellowing and browning of leaves, presence of woodpeckers, D-shaped exit holes in the branches or trunk, and shoots growing from the tree trunk or roots. If your ash trees have these symptoms, call a specialist like us at Brockman Tree & Lawn Care.Susceptible Ash Tree Varieties
White, black, and green ash trees are the most susceptible to emerald ash borer infection. However, authorities noted that 16 species of ash trees and the White Fringe tree are the usual targets of the EAB.Call a Tree Specialist
